Once You Know

by Michael Averill

/

about

"Once You Know," was inspired from my time with the On Root Project 2017 artist residency in Haida Gwaii. It was written to foster awareness and discussion around the unsustainable clear cut and overfishing situations I observed during my visit there.

"Once You Know," is available for free, and sharing/posting/re-posting is welcomed and encouraged. If you feel compelled to support this initiative, any contributions/donations will be payed forward to the efforts of the On Root Project in their pursuit of strengthening land and ocean stewardship practices in Haida Gwaii.

Lyrics:

Once You Know
By Michael Averill
©2017

Underneath the ancient canopy
Live millenniums of diversity
And they speak to each other, a new language discovered
But soon to be clear cut away.....clear cut away

Into hectares of board feet
Taken well beyond necessity
Knocked down with chain saws
Carried off in steel claws
And shipped overseas late at night

(Chorus)

Ignorance can only be claimed for so long
Once the old forests are gone, they are gone
What will you do with that thought in your mind?
What will you do with your time, once you know?

Underneath the rollin' wavy seas, we've been
Overfishin' beyond capacity, and pretty soon
We're gonna feel the bigger consequence
The more we move on indifferent
Our way of life will never be the same
If we keep disrupting the food chain and

(Chorus)

Ignorance can only be claimed for so long
Once the life in the ocean is gone, then it's gone
What will you do with that thought in your mind?
What will you do with your time, once you know?

(Instrumental)

None of this is independent
Because everything is connected
The trees to the oceans, our thoughts and emotions
We're responsible for how this plays out

It's time for redefining stewardship
We gotta protect our land and water relationship
It's time to care for each other, for home and one another
And together, respect agreements we made, and new decisions we make

(Chorus)

Cause ignorance can only be claimed for so long
Once the life in the system is gone, then we're gone
What will you do with that thought in your mind?
What will you do with your time, once you know?
