That Star

about

Over the course of my intensive touring years, I had a lot of personal conversations with people along the road. Whether it was a complete stranger I met walking in the park, or family member I hadn’t seen in a while, everyone had their struggles. Not everyone shares them.

Since 2018, I have known more people than I want to count that succumbed to the burden of their thoughts and feelings of isolation. It’s taught me there is so much I don’t see, that mental health is far more layered and complex than I ever imagined, and that we’re all dealing with a lot.

I’ve noticed that January has become labelled as one of the most difficult and depressing months of the year. As a result, there is generally a bit more conversation about mental health. I think that is great, but mental wellness is an all year thing.

I’m putting a song out today that I wrote in the process of trying to make sense of the grief and questions I have had on this topic. I wasn’t going to release it for a number of fearful and uncomfortable reasons, but I’ve come to learn that moving through discomfort is the best move forward.

So with that, I hope this is helpful in some way, and that it serves as a reminder to check in on each other more often.

lyrics

Lyrics:

When a star is born
The only thing it knows is how to shine
And all it ever desires
Is to find a place among the others to share its light

And as that star grows older
It strives to be brighter and bolder
Maybe one day it'll join a constellation
And be a part of galactic civilization

But sometimes celestial pressure's too much
It can cause a star to fall
Lose orbit and all its trust
It slips into the darkness
And gets cold when it's had enough
And that star starts thinkin' of giving up

Well the gravity of loneliness pulls heavy
An event horizon no light can escape
The furthest stars are the ones trying hardest to be seen
And with a final flare that star spends the last of its energy

So next time you see a star burnin' low
Next time you see a star driftin' off in space alone
Let it know
That it still shines
Make it known
That it has space to share its light
And that it has a place among the others in the sky

Let it know it shines
Let it know it shines
Let it know it shines
Let it know it shines
